摘要：
It has now become possible to re-sequence entire bacterial genomes with an accuracy that enables the identification of all mutations relative to a reference sequence. This capability is deployed to compare the genomic sequence of E. coli before and after an adaptation process during which a particular phenotypes is selected for. The genetic basis for bacterial adaptation can thus be determined. This capability is opening up new possibilities for discovery and design. It is likely that we can now study the genetic basis for infections disease, virulence and adaptation of human pathogens.
